A landscape shaped by tufa and water
Southern Tuscia, and the Agro Falisco in particular, is characterised by extensive tufa formations created mainly by the Vico volcano and partly by the Sabatini craters. These deposits formed apparently flat plateaus that are now occupied by fields and woodland.
The horizontal landscape is interrupted by deep gorges carved by streams, often enclosed by near-vertical tufa walls. Water, erosion and the natural collapse of rock continue to transform them.
A changing ecosystem
Landslides and erosion open new spaces that are quickly colonised by plants and animals. Vegetation grows at different heights and under changing light, giving the valley a new appearance in every season. Caves and natural shelters also help explain why hermits and religious communities chose this landscape over the centuries.
